Job Overview

A Consultant Geriatrician is a senior physician specializing in the care of older adults with complex medical needs, including frailty, dementia, falls, polypharmacy, and multimorbidity. The role involves leading multidisciplinary teams (MDTs), optimizing patient care pathways, and contributing to service development, research, and medical education.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) and long-term management of older patients in acute, rehabilitation, and community settings.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams, working closely with nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and social care teams.
  • Manage conditions related to frailty, dementia, falls, delirium, and palliative care, ensuring holistic, patient-centered treatment.
  • Develop and enhance frailty services, orthogeriatrics, acute geriatric units, and community outreach programs.
  • Participate in clinical governance, quality improvement projects, and service redesign.
  • Supervise and mentor junior doctors, registrars, and medical students.
  • Contribute to clinical research and national geriatric care initiatives to advance evidence-based practice.

Requirements

  • Substantive applicants with GMC Specialist Registration in Geriatric Medicine or General Internal Medicine (or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview).
  • Proven experience in geriatric medicine, acute care, or community elderly care services.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and multidisciplinary team collaboration skills.
  • Commitment to teaching, research, and service development.
