Job Overview
A Consultant Rheumatologist is a senior specialist responsible for diagnosing and managing autoimmune and musculoskeletal diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, vasculitis, and osteoporosis. The role involves working within a multidisciplinary team (MDT) to provide high-quality patient care, contributing to research, teaching, and service development.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of rheumatologic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, vasculitis, and osteoporosis.
- Conduct outpatient rheumatology clinics, reviewing new and follow-up patients.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including physiotherapists, specialist nurses, and orthopaedic surgeons, to deliver comprehensive care.
- Perform and interpret diagnostic procedures, including ultrasound-guided joint injections.
- Contribute to clinical governance, service development, and quality improvement projects.
- For the Rheumatology + Acute Medicine Post: Provide acute medical care, participate in the acute medical on-call rota, and manage general medical inpatients.
- Teach and supervise junior doctors, registrars, and medical students.
- Participate in clinical research, audits, and national rheumatology initiatives.
Requirements
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification with full GMC registration.
- CCT in Rheumatology (and Acute Medicine for the dual-role post) or within six months of completion.
- Strong expertise in autoimmune diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, and inflammatory arthritis.
- Excellent teamwork, leadership, and communication skills.
- Experience in teaching, research, and service development is desirable.
