Job Overview

A Cardiology Consultant is a senior physician specializing in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of cardiovascular diseases. They provide expert care for patients with conditions such as coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, and valvular heart disease. The role involves leading a multidisciplinary team, performing advanced cardiac procedures, and contributing to research, teaching, and service development.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert clinical care in both inpatient and outpatient cardiology services.
  • Perform and interpret cardiac investigations, including echocardiography, ECGs, angiography, and stress tests.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams, including junior doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals.
  • Manage emergency cardiac cases, including acute coronary syndromes and arrhythmias.
  • Perform or oversee interventional procedures such as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and pacemaker implantation (if subspecialized).
  • Work closely with cardiac surgeons, emergency teams, and intensive care units to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Participate in medical education and training for junior doctors and cardiology trainees.
  • Engage in clinical governance, audits, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance cardiology services.
  • Contribute to research and innovation, advancing cardiovascular treatments and patient care.

Requirements

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification with full GMC registration.
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Cardiology (or within six months of completion).
  • Extensive experience in diagnosing and managing cardiac conditions.
  • Competence in non-invasive and/or interventional cardiology procedures.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills in a high-pressure environment.
  • Active participation in research, audits, and service development.
