A Consultant in Acute Medicine is a senior physician specializing in the rapid assessment, diagnosis, and management of acutely unwell patients. They lead multidisciplinary teams in the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), ensuring efficient patient flow, high-quality care, and timely decision-making to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert clinical care for acutely ill patients, ensuring timely assessment and treatment.
- Lead and supervise junior doctors, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals in the AMU.
- Make rapid clinical decisions to stabilize patients and determine further management (discharge, admission, or specialty referral).
- Work closely with emergency medicine, intensive care, and specialty teams to optimize patient outcomes.
- Participate in teaching, training, and mentoring of medical trainees and students.
- Contribute to clinical governance, service development, and quality improvement initiatives within acute medicine.
- Engage in research and innovation, implementing new protocols and improving acute care pathways.
Requirements
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification with full GMC registration.
- Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Acute Medicine (or within six months of completion).
- Strong clinical expertise in acute and emergency care, resuscitation, and patient stabilization.
- Leadership and teamwork skills to manage a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Experience in teaching, research, and quality improvement within a hospital setting.
