Job Overview
An SHO (Senior House Officer) in Obstetrics and Gynaecology is a junior doctor responsible for providing medical care to patients in maternity and gynaecological units. They work under the supervision of registrars and consultants, gaining hands-on experience in managing pregnancies, deliveries, and women's health conditions.
Responsibilities
- Assist in antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care for pregnant women.
- Support and perform normal vaginal deliveries and assist in caesarean sections.
- Manage emergency gynaecological cases, such as ectopic pregnancies and miscarriages.
- Conduct gynaecological examinations, ultrasound scans, and minor procedures.
- Participate in ward rounds, outpatient clinics, and theatre sessions.
- Ensure accurate documentation and patient record-keeping.
- Provide on-call cover for obstetric and gynaecological emergencies.
- Assist in multidisciplinary team meetings and patient management planning.
- Supervise medical students and junior trainees, supporting their clinical learning.
- Participate in clinical audits, research, and quality improvement projects.
Requirements
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).
- Prior experience in Obstetrics & Gynaecology is preferred but not always required.
- Basic surgical and procedural skills (e.g., suturing, assisting in C-sections).
- Strong communication, teamwork, and decision-making skills.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and training in women's health.
