The Consultant in General Internal Medicine (GIM) / Respiratory Medicine is responsible for providing expert care to patients with complex medical conditions, specializing in both internal medicine and respiratory diseases. The role involves diagnosing and managing acute and chronic conditions, performing diagnostic procedures, supervising junior staff, contributing to teaching and research, and enhancing the service's quality and patient outcomes.
Responsibilities
Clinical Duties:
- Patient Care:
- Diagnose and manage a wide range of internal medical conditions, with a focus on respiratory diseases such as asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease, and pneumonia.
- Lead the clinical management of both acute and chronic respiratory conditions in inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Perform diagnostic procedures such as bronchoscopy, spirometry, and sleep studies.
- Provide multidisciplinary care, working with physiotherapists, nurses, and other specialists to treat complex cases.
- Emergency & On-Call Duties:
- Participate in the acute medical on-call rota, providing expert advice and care for patients with medical and respiratory emergencies.
- Manage critically ill patients requiring intensive care or emergency interventions related to respiratory failure or other internal medicine conditions.
Leadership & Teamwork:
- Supervision & Mentorship:
- Lead and supervise junior doctors, specialty trainees, and medical students, offering support, education, and career guidance.
- Collaborate with other medical specialists and healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care for patients with complex conditions.
- Team Participation:
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, case discussions, and clinical rounds, providing expert insight into the management of respiratory and internal medicine conditions.
Teaching & Training:
- Education:
- Provide teaching, mentoring, and training to junior medical staff, medical students, and other healthcare professionals.
- Organize and participate in departmental teaching sessions, seminars, and workshops on both respiratory medicine and general internal medicine.
- Clinical Supervision:
- Supervise clinical practice, ensuring that trainees and junior staff adhere to best clinical practices and maintain high standards of care.
Research & Development:

Clinical Research:
- Lead or participate in research projects, clinical trials, and audits focused on improving respiratory care and general internal medicine practices.
- Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at relevant conferences to contribute to the academic growth of the department.

Quality Improvement:
- Contribute to clinical audits and service evaluations, aiming to improve patient care, safety, and the overall quality of the service.
- Help develop new clinical pathways, protocols, and guidelines for managing respiratory and general internal medicine conditions.
Administrative & Policy Duties:
- Clinical Governance & Service Development:
- Take part in developing and reviewing departmental policies, guidelines, and protocols to enhance patient care.
- Engage in clinical governance activities, ensuring that the department adheres to local and national standards of practice and patient safety.
Requirements
- Essential:
- Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent).
- Completion of Core Medical Training (CMT) and Specialty Training (ST) in General Internal Medicine and Respiratory Medicine.
- Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in General Internal Medicine or Respiratory Medicine.
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a license to practice as a Consultant.
- Desirable:
- Post-graduate qualifications in Respiratory Medicine or relevant subspecialty (e.g., FRCP, FCCP).
- Experience with specialized diagnostic procedures such as bronchoscopy or sleep studies.
- Involvement in research, clinical trials, or audits in respiratory medicine or internal medicine.
