Job Overview

The Consultant Surgeon will be responsible for providing expert surgical care to patients, performing a wide range of surgical procedures, and leading a team of junior surgeons and medical staff. The role involves patient management, performing complex surgeries, teaching and mentoring medical staff, and contributing to clinical research and service development.

Responsibilities

Clinical Duties:

  • Surgical Procedures:
    • Perform routine and complex surgeries within a specialized field (e.g., general surgery, orthopaedics, cardiothoracic, etc.).
    • Manage patients pre-operatively, intra-operatively, and post-operatively to ensure the best outcomes.
    • Provide expertise in diagnosing surgical conditions and advising on treatment options.
  • Patient Care:
    • Lead clinical consultations and assessments for patients requiring surgery.
    • Provide comprehensive post-operative care, monitoring recovery, managing complications, and ensuring appropriate follow-up.
    • Lead and supervise outpatient clinics, ensuring continuity of care for surgical patients.

Leadership & Teamwork:

  • Supervision of Junior Staff:
    • Supervise, mentor, and guide junior surgeons, residents, and medical students, ensuring high standards of clinical practice and professionalism.
    • Participate in the surgical department's on-call rota and lead emergency surgical cases when required.
  • Collaboration with Multidisciplinary Teams:
    • Work closely with anaesthetists, nurses, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals to deliver integrated care.
    • Actively contribute to departmental meetings, clinical rounds, and case discussions.

Teaching & Training:

  • Education:
    • Provide teaching and clinical training to junior doctors, surgical residents, and medical students.
    • Contribute to continuing medical education (CME) programs and formal in-house educational sessions.

Research & Development:

  • Clinical Research:
    • Engage in clinical research aimed at improving surgical outcomes, techniques, and patient care.
    • Lead or participate in clinical audits to monitor surgical practice, identify areas for improvement, and enhance patient safety.
  • Quality Improvement:
    • Contribute to service development and the introduction of new technologies and techniques to improve surgical care.
    • Develop, review, and implement clinical guidelines and protocols.

Administrative & Policy Duties:

  • Departmental Contribution:
    • Assist in the management and development of the surgical department’s services, ensuring efficient delivery of care.
    • Participate in the development of departmental policies, procedures, and standards of practice.
  • Clinical Governance:
    • Participate in clinical audits, governance meetings, and risk management activities to ensure high-quality, safe surgical care.

Requirements

  • Essential:

    • Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent).
    • Completion of Core Surgical Training (CST) and Specialty Surgical Training (ST) in the relevant surgical field.
    • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in surgery.
    • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a license to practice as a consultant.
    • Fellowships in surgical societies (e.g., FRCS, FACS).
  • Desirable:

    • Subspecialty training or certification in a specific area of surgery (e.g., robotic surgery, minimally invasive techniques, vascular surgery).
    • Active involvement in research and clinical trials related to surgery.
