Job Overview

The Consultant in General Internal Medicine (GIM) will provide expert, high-quality care to adult patients with a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions. This role includes direct patient care, leadership, teaching, research, and service development. The Consultant will be responsible for managing both common and complex medical cases, working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, and overseeing the development of best practices in patient management.

Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care:
    • Diagnose and manage acute and chronic conditions in general internal medicine, including but not limited to diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory disorders, and gastrointestinal problems.
    • Lead patient care in inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings, providing a comprehensive approach to patient diagnosis, treatment, and management.
    • Manage complex medical cases, providing expert opinion on diagnosis, treatment, and care plans.
    • Take a leading role in managing critically ill patients in an acute setting, including during on-call duties and emergency care.
    • Participate in patient care in multidisciplinary team meetings and case discussions.

Leadership & Teamwork:

  • Lead and supervise junior doctors, specialty trainees, and medical students, providing mentorship and support for their professional development.
  • Work closely with allied health professionals, nurses, and other specialists to ensure coordinated patient care.
  • Participate in the hospital's acute medical service, including out-of-hours and weekend work as required.

Teaching and Training:

  • Provide clinical teaching and supervision to medical students, junior doctors, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Engage in the ongoing education and training of healthcare staff, developing teaching materials, and delivering formal teaching sessions.
  • Act as a clinical supervisor, helping junior doctors with their medical training and career development.

Research & Development:

  • Engage in clinical research, audits, and quality improvement projects aimed at improving patient outcomes and hospital service delivery.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of evidence-based guidelines and clinical pathways within the department.
  • Actively participate in departmental and multi-disciplinary clinical audits and meetings, driving improvements in patient care.

Service Development & Quality Assurance:

  • Take a lead role in the development of clinical services, contributing to policy formation, pathway development, and service delivery models.
  • Ensure clinical practice aligns with the latest national guidelines, best practices, and local protocols.
  • Participate in and lead clinical audits to improve patient safety, care quality, and service efficiency.
  • Help in addressing and improving patient experience through involvement in patient safety and satisfaction initiatives.

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Essential:
    • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a license to practice.
    • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in General Internal Medicine or within six months of obtaining CCT.
    • Completion of Core Medical Training (CMT) and Specialty Training (ST) in General Internal Medicine.
    • Significant experience in managing patients in acute and general internal medicine, including high-acuity settings.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead clinical teams and supervise junior staff.
    • Strong commitment to continuous professional development and lifelong learning.

Desirable:

  • Additional qualification or expertise in a subspecialty of internal medicine (e.g., cardiology, respiratory medicine, diabetes/endocrinology).
  • Involvement in research or quality improvement projects within a hospital setting.
