Job Overview

The Consultant Respiratory role is a senior medical position, responsible for providing high-quality care to patients with respiratory conditions, offering expertise in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of a wide range of pulmonary diseases. The role combines clinical leadership, patient care, and opportunities for teaching and research, ensuring the delivery of the highest standards of respiratory medicine.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical Expertise: Provide expert advice in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with complex respiratory conditions such as COPD, asthma, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary fibrosis, and respiratory infections.
  • Patient Care: Lead outpatient clinics, inpatient care, and emergency services for respiratory conditions. Oversee the management of patients requiring advanced respiratory interventions, including ventilation support and thoracic ultrasound assessments.
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work alongside a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care. Liaise with other specialties where appropriate, including thoracic surgery, cardiology, and oncology.
  • Teaching & Training: Supervise and mentor junior doctors, medical students, and other healthcare professionals. Deliver training on advanced respiratory practices, including diagnostic procedures and new treatment protocols.
  • Research & Audit: Participate in ongoing clinical research, audits, and quality improvement initiatives aimed at advancing care for patients with respiratory diseases. Collaborate on academic projects and contribute to publications and conferences.
  • Clinical Leadership: Play a key role in the development of clinical pathways and protocols for the respiratory department, ensuring evidence-based care is delivered consistently. Lead and participate in clinical governance and quality assurance processes.

Requirements

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice.
  • Completion of specialist training in Respiratory Medicine and attainment of CCT (or within 6 months of attaining it).
  • Experience in managing a broad spectrum of respiratory conditions, with particular emphasis on complex cases and advanced respiratory interventions.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development and ongoing education in respiratory medicine.
  • Applicants should be on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of attaining their CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training) in Respiratory Medicine. Alternatively, applicants who have submitted their CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) application to the GMC will be considered.
  • A higher degree, MD, or PhD in respiratory medicine or a related field is desirable. This demonstrates a commitment to research and academic development in the field of respiratory medicine.
  • Level 1 accreditation in thoracic ultrasound is highly desirable. This qualification indicates expertise in performing and interpreting thoracic ultrasound procedures to diagnose pleural and pulmonary conditions effectively.
